1 - Establish your cleaning needs
before you buy a vacuum.
Do you have pets? How deep is your carpet pile? Do you want to use your vacuum on hard floors and carpets? Do you have stairs, high ceilings, or other difficult to clean areas? Do you have allergies? Answering questions like these will help as you look at vacuums—no one vacuum is ideal for every situation.
2 - Be wary of advertising!
Many manufacturers make extravagant claims or don't give you a complete picture. Often the best vacuums are from companies that do little or no advertising. Also watch out for 50% off sales. 50% off an over priced or soon to be discontinued vacuum is not a deal especially when you can no longer find the bags, filters or parts to keep it running.
3 - Don't assume that because a vacuum
gets the surface dirt, it is also
cleans deep into the carpet.
4 - Don't forget to check bag or filter
pricing and availability.
Chain stores often quit stocking bags and filters after they discontinue the model. Some bagless vacuums are attractive because you don't have to buy bags only for you to find out it has hard to find, expensive filters that need frequent replacement.
5 - Don't assume that a brand that was
good in the past is still reliable.
Most Manufacturers have been bought and sold a time or two. Most have moved their plants to other countries or have another company make the vacuum and they simply put their name on it or make cheaper parts and replace metal with cheap plastic. |
